THE STORY

Mae Bellnotch is a lonely, cynical young girl who has lived in an orphanage for over nine years. One mid summer day, she decides to run away and escape to New England, where she will have a chance to make a living and get an actual life. She never does make it to New England, but instead discovers an incredible mid-western boarding school, known as the AWHV, for the future warriors, heroes, and villains of the world. With no better place to turn, Mae poses as the daughter of a wannabe warrior and attends the school. For the first time in her life, she makes friends. She earns an education. She has a home.

The only things troubling her are the odd customs she must abide by. Mae receives a codename, a dorm room, and, worst of all, a partner. In a single day, her hatred for her partner goes from  a simple playground loathing to burning fury, and Mae makes a pact to get rid of her partner by doing what she does best: evil practical jokes.

Her partner flees in terror immediately, and Mae finds herself with a new partner, whom she also despises. When she rids herself of that one, another comes along, then another, and it keeps going on until finally, Mae begins to make a game out of getting her partners to hate her, and she becomes the most infamous student in the entire AWHV community.

Years pass, and Mae's reputation grows, until one day, a new partner comes along, a young boy with the codename 'Jasa.' At first, Mae thinks of him as just another speed bump in her life. But he soon proves to be the most irritating and stubborn of all her partners, as her every attempt at pranking him ends as a total failure.

As Mae tries desperately to remove Jasa from her life, a series of incidents break out throughout the school. Students find themselves locked in closets for days, getting attacked on campus, and many other cruel pranks, all seemingly courtesy of Mae.

As Mae sets out to clear her name, she begins to learn the truth about her dark past and finds that her haunting future might make all of her efforts futile. And, as it all ends up, her only hope is to turn to the aggravating partner she longs to liberate herself of...
